Biography of Carmen Giraldez

carmen_giraldez_200“A good piece of art doesn’t need an explanation in words; it explains itself. The important thing is that upon seeing it, the viewer experiences an intensity of feelings and can take home something that will last
and reveal even more of itself over time.”
Carmen Giraldez was born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1976. Carmen acquired her interest in art, and especially
painting, from her father who is an avid collector and also a painter. Her early childhood training was
“at his knees” as she likes to say.
Her formal training began in 1996 at the University of Barcelona where, in 2002, she obtained her Bachelor
of Fine Arts Degree in painting and sculpture and two more years at the prestigious school of Art La llotja.
During this time, she had the unique opportunity to study with and become the assistant to the great Spanish
sculptor Marcaginer (1918-2006). Since becoming a full-time professional artist she has exhibited widely in
Spain and other European countries. Her paintings are in private collections in Europe, Kuwait, the United
Arab Emirates, Canada and the USA. Although she periodically makes incursions into other subject areas, the
human figure is her focus. She attempts to capture and convey the hidden secrets of their personalities.
For a young emerging artist, she has had tremendous success. Almost immediately upon receiving her degree
she began exhibiting widely at galleries in her native Spain and quickly thereupon at other cities in
Europe. Prizes followed almost immediately. In 2002 alone she received three First Prizes in juried
competitions (see Prizes and Awards below).
